Keonna Jordan Interview

Who is Keonna Jordan?

Keonna: Keonna Jordan is a mother, wife, and music artist but, first and foremost, a child of God. I found my calling for music at the early age of 5 years old. My father had an in-home studio set up in our living room. This is where I spent most of my time observing and watching his every move when it came to music. By the age of 9 I was writing my own songs, recording and even self engineering.

How would you best describe your sound?

KJ: This question has always been difficult because there really isn’t a straightforward answer when it comes to my sound. For one record you might get R&B Keonna Jordan, on the next record you might get EDM Keonna Jordan, haha. Being born and raised in Cali in the early stages of my career, I would have described myself as having a Westcoast/Bay Area R&B sound. But since relocating to VA, my sound has definitely expanded into a different sound and many different genres.

Being from California and relocating to Virginia, what would you say is one thing most people don’t know about the Virginia music scene?

KJ: Moving from Cali to VA was definitely a huge music culture shock for me! My music legends have always been E-40, Snoop, Ice Cube and the list goes on! In addition to West Coast legends, of course we have our worldwide legends such as Missy, Timbo and Pharrell. When I tell you I had no idea that they were born in VA! I had no idea how huge the music scene is out here! I’ve met and even worked with some of the best music producers and engineers out of VA.

Hannon Lane who produced Rehab by Rhianna and many more big projects from big artists. I have also met Bink who produced “Lights, Camera, Action” by Mr. Cheeks. I have worked with George Mayers who engineered for Michael Jackson, yes MJ! (Also engineered for Blackstreet, Nsync and many more)! The amazing talent hailing from VA is insane and I’m so blessed to be here!

What was the inspiration behind your hot new album single and video “1 on 1”?

KJ: You might laugh at this, but honestly, my slight weight gain and curves after recently having a baby, is what drew my inspiration for “1 ON 1.” There are many women out there who feel less sexy after having kids, and me having 4 kids, I want to be a testimony of how you can still be sexy! Don’t be afraid to tap into your seductive side and let your partner know you still that b****!

What was it like working with Andrew Hypes for this release?

KJ: Anyone who knows Drew, knows that working with him and just being in his world is a vibe itself. I’ve known Andrew for years! Funny story with how the collaboration even came about is that one early morning, I got on IG and I saw Andrew on live making a beat from scratch. As he was putting all these instruments together, I’m thinking to myself, “He doesn’t know yet, but as soon as he’s done making this beat, I’m jumping in his direct message to get it!” And that’s exactly what I did! That beat ended up being “1 ON 1.”

What motivates you to keep going in the music industry as it is forever changing?

KJ: Honestly, being an independent artist is definitely not for the weak. It’s very easy to lose focus and become discouraged. What keeps me going is the true love and passion I have for creating good music. It’s something that’s always been in my family history.

What is up next for Keonna Jordan?

KJ: You are first to get this scoop, but I am actually working on an EP that I plan on releasing sometime this summer. I’m really excited to share with the world what I’ve been working on.

Where can readers find out more about yourself and your music?

KJ: Readers can find more about myself on “ONTHESCENENY” and Apple Music where my entire catalog is available as well as some cool facts in the “Artist About Me” section.
